Best Places to Visit in Mauritius
1. Grand Baie (North Coast)
Grand Baie is the tourist hub of Mauritius, lively, convenient, and the most developed area on the island. It offers the best range of restaurants (Indian, Creole, Chinese, seafood), shopping on Sunset Boulevard, nightlife at the Caudan-style waterfront strip, and easy access to catamaran departures. The bay itself is gorgeous, though the beach directly in town is not the finest on the island.
- Best for: First-timers, couples who want nightlife options, and anyone wanting easy access to everything.
- Beach tip: Super U beach, just south of Grand Baie centre, is quieter than the main bay and better for swimming.
2. Flic en Flac (West Coast)
Flic en Flac is where the sunsets happen. The lagoon faces directly west, and every evening from May to December, the sky turns orange and pink behind Le Morne mountain in a sequence that draws everyone staying on the west coast to their balconies. It is the most photographed time of day in Mauritius.
The west coast is also where Mauritius's resident population of wild spinner dolphins lives year-round. Early morning dolphin-watching trips from Tamarin (just south of Flic en Flac) go out around 6:30 am–7 am to find the pods before they move offshore for the day.
- Best for: Honeymooners, photographers, and anyone prioritising sunsets and dolphin watching.
3. Belle Mare and Trou d'Eau Douce (East Coast)
The east coast has Mauritius's finest beaches, longer, whiter, and calmer than the west coast (the reef sits further out, creating a larger, flatter lagoon). Belle Mare beach is consistently rated among the top 10 beaches in the Indian Ocean. The Île aux Cerfs island lies just offshore from Trou d'Eau Douce and is the island's most popular day trip.
The east coast also hosts Mauritius's highest concentration of 5-star resorts: Shangri-La Le Touessrok, Constance Belle Mare Plage, LUX Belle Mare, and Four Seasons Mauritius at Anahita are all here.
- Best for: Families (calm lagoon, safe for children), luxury resort stays, beach purists.
4. Le Morne and South West
Le Morne Brabant is a dramatic basalt rock peninsula rising 556 metres from the southwest coast. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the most iconic natural landmark in Mauritius. The beach at its base is arguably the most beautiful on the island: powder-white sand, turquoise water, and the black mountain as a backdrop.
The Le Morne Lagoon is also a world-class kite surfing destination; the channel between the peninsula and Île aux Bénitiers creates a consistent wind corridor that draws professionals for the annual Mauritius Kite Surf Pro competition.
The Underwater Waterfall: One of Mauritius' most famous attractions, the underwater waterfall near Le Morne is a natural optical illusion visible only from the air. The best way to experience it is on a helicopter tour, which offers spectacular aerial views of the lagoon and coastline. Helicopter flights typically cost ₹15,000–₹20,000 per person.
5. Chamarel and the South
Chamarel's Seven Coloured Earths is the island's most photographed inland attraction: a small dune field where volcanic soil has cooled and oxidised into seven distinct colours, i.e. red, brown, violet, green, blue, purple, and yellow, that naturally separate and do not fully mix despite centuries of rain. The Chamarel Waterfall nearby drops 100 metres into a gorge surrounded by black palm trees.
The south coast drive from Le Morne through Black River Gorges National Park to Mahebourg covers the island's wildest and greenest terrain, dense native forests, endemic bird species (the Mauritius kestrel, one of conservation's great recovery stories), and the dramatic Gris Gris cliffs at the island's southernmost point, where Indian Ocean swells crash against volcanic rock.
- Best for: Nature lovers, photographers, travellers who want more than beach time.
6. Port Louis
Mauritius's capital is not a city you linger in for days, but it earns a half-day stop. The Central Market is the most sensory experience on the island: layers of fresh spices, street food, handicrafts, and the kind of organised chaos that feels immediately familiar to Indian visitors. The Caudan Waterfront area has restaurants, a cinema, and the Blue Penny Museum (home to two of the world's rarest stamps, the 1847 One Penny Orange and Two Pence Blue, each worth over $1 million and authenticated by the UN). The Aapravasi Ghat, a 5-minute walk from Caudan, should not be skipped by Indian travellers.
Best Things to Do in Mauritius
From catamaran cruises and dolphin encounters to helicopter rides and underwater adventures, Mauritius offers a wide range of experiences for honeymooners, families, and adventure travellers. These are the top attractions and activities worth including in your Mauritius itinerary.
Catamaran Cruise to Île aux Cerfs
A catamaran cruise to Île aux Cerfs is one of the most popular activities in Mauritius. Most full-day cruises include snorkelling stops, beach time on the island, a BBQ lunch, and scenic sailing through the island's turquoise lagoons. The combination of crystal-clear waters, water sports, and relaxed island vibes makes it a favourite among couples and families.
- Cost: ₹3,500–₹5,000 per person
- Best for: Couples, honeymooners, families, and first-time visitors
Dolphin Watching in Tamarin Bay
The west coast of Mauritius is home to wild spinner and bottlenose dolphins that can be spotted throughout the year. Early-morning boat tours offer the best chance of seeing dolphins in their natural habitat, with many excursions also including snorkelling stops and visits to nearby lagoons.
- Cost: ₹2,500–₹4,000 per person
- Best for: Nature lovers, families, and adventure seekers
Underwater Sea Walk
One of the most unique experiences in Mauritius, the Underwater Sea Walk allows visitors to walk on the ocean floor while wearing a specially designed helmet that supplies fresh air. No swimming or diving skills are required, making it suitable for both adults and children.
- Cost: ₹2,500–₹3,500 per person
- Best for: Families, non-swimmers, and first-time adventure travellers
Helicopter Tour Over the Underwater Waterfall
The famous Underwater Waterfall near Le Morne is a natural optical illusion that can only be seen from the air. A helicopter tour provides breathtaking views of the island's lagoons, coral reefs, and coastline, making it one of Mauritius' most sought-after luxury experiences.
- Cost: ₹12,000–₹20,000 per person
- Best for: Honeymooners, photographers, and luxury travellers
Water Sports and Marine Activities
Mauritius is one of the best destinations in the Indian Ocean for water sports. Visitors can enjoy parasailing, jet skiing, kitesurfing, scuba diving, paddleboarding, and snorkelling across the island's protected lagoons. Blue Bay Marine Park is particularly famous for its coral reefs and marine life.
- Cost: ₹1,500–₹8,000+ depending on the activity selected
South Mauritius Sightseeing Tour
A full-day South Island tour covers many of Mauritius' most iconic attractions, including Chamarel Seven Coloured Earths, Chamarel Waterfall, Black River Gorges National Park, Le Morne, and Gris Gris. It is the best way to experience the island's natural beauty beyond its beaches and resorts.
- Cost: ₹5,000–₹8,000 per vehicle for a private tour
- Best for: First-time visitors and families

Mauritius is the most India-friendly food destination in the Indian Ocean. Here is what the reality looks like:
What you will find easily:
- Dholl puri: Mauritius's most popular street food, thin flatbread stuffed with yellow split pea paste, served with curry, chutney, and achaar. MUR 15–25. Essential.
- Biryani: Mutton, chicken, and vegetable biryani at local restaurants across the island

For Jain travellers: Easier than most international destinations, but still requires advance coordination. No-onion, no-garlic options can be arranged by most 4-star and 5-star resorts if communicated before arrival. Pickyourtrail's travel managers handle this pre-arrival, so it is confirmed in writing.

We had been to Mauritius for our honeymoon in December. Mauritius is a wonderful place and there a lot of places to cover. The entire trip was planned by Pickurtrail and the trip was very comfortable with a good luxury hotel and the cars provided to go around the place was also good. Initially we had issue with hotel booking and Pickurtrail took up the issue and had offered to refund. For Mauritius it is better to do a research by yourself on the places u want to visit and by co ordinating with pick ur trail to make the best of it. Good job by Akash and Ayushi on owning the responsibility for the issue and making sure the issue is not carry forwarded for the rest of the days.

My husband and I travelled to the Maldives with PYT in 2025 and to Mauritius in 2026, and we're already convinced we'll be planning all our future trips with them. Once you've fixed the destination in your mind, PYT takes care of everything else. Their customer support is the best I've ever experienced, the team is well-informed, kind, and attentive, and they remember even the smallest details and preferences. Every trip is customised to make the experience feel effortless and elevated, right from the stay to the activities. There's room to personalise absolutely everything! I'd love to mention a few names. Shrishty was my first point of contact for the Mauritius trip, and she matched our excitement and enthusiasm from the very start. She listened carefully to our likes and preferences and made sure the trip was planned to perfection. Before the trip begins, PYT creates a dedicated WhatsApp group with multiple team members to ensure round-the-clock support. You may never actually need it, since the trip is planned so well, but just knowing that help is a message away brings real peace of mind. They also shared daily updates on the group about pick-up timings and the day's agenda, so we always knew when to be ready, what to pack, and what to expect. Shreyah would call every evening to check in on how the day went and whether we needed anything. Her daily follow-ups made us feel so well taken care of and gave the entire trip a premium feel throughout our time in Mauritius. If you're looking for a hassle-free trip that still gives you real say and independence over your vacation, PYT is the tour operator to go to!

We had went to Mauritius trip using Pickyourtrail as our partner. Trip planning and recommendations are really good . Arrangements were on time and executed on time. Everything was perfectly fine. Just one suggestion that there are few activities that can only be booked at site and there are few activities that can be prebooked. In case of casella walk with lion we wanted to explore but we didnt know we can prebook and tickets were not available when we got to know about that . So its better to add that to your recommendations or explained by trip handler so that you can choose to pre book that. Normally people dont know what activities are there until they arrive on site. So its better to recommend few unique experiences before hand. Rest everything Is fine. Everything was handled well. It was tension free trip and a memorable one.
