South Africa Transportation Guide for Tourists

Getting Around South Africa

South Africa has no national rail network suited to tourist travel (the Rovos Rail luxury train is the exception, not a practical transit option). Road transport and domestic flights are the primary modes.

Rental Car (Highly Recommended): South Africa drives on the left — same as India. Roads in the Cape Town area, the Garden Route, and between Johannesburg and Kruger are well-maintained. A rental car gives you the flexibility to explore at your own pace. Book through major international agencies (Avis, Budget, Hertz) — South African local agencies vary in quality. A standard 2WD hatchback covers all tourist routes in summer. A 4WD SUV is required for any off-road safari self-drive in Kruger's gravel roads.

Domestic Flights: Johannesburg to Cape Town (~2 hours) is one of South Africa's busiest air corridors. FlySafair and Airlink are among the leading domestic carriers. Low-cost services are also available through carriers such as Lift.

Cape Town MyCiti Bus: An affordable urban bus network covering Cape Town's main tourist areas, including the V&A Waterfront, Sea Point, and Camps Bay. A DayTripper card gives unlimited day travel.

Taxis in Cape Town and Johannesburg: Bolt is widely available in Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban, and other major cities. It is generally preferred over traditional street-hailed taxis due to transparent pricing and app-based tracking.

Transfers: For airport-to-hotel and city-to-lodge transfers, pre-booked private vehicles through your Pickyourtrail package are strongly recommended — particularly in Johannesburg, where navigating independently from the airport is not advised for first-time visitors.

South Africa Visa Requirements for Indian Travellers (2026)

Indian passport holders require a visa to enter South Africa. There is no visa on arrival for Indian travellers.

South Africa e-Visa for Indians

e-Visa (Recommended): Apply online through the South African Department of Home Affairs portal. Available to Indian nationals for tourism purposes. Allows up to 90 days. Processing: 5–15 working days typically, though 3–4 weeks is the recommended application window.

ETA (Electronic Travel Authorisation): A new digital pathway introduced from late 2025, providing faster approval (sometimes within 24–72 hours) for eligible travellers entering through OR Tambo International (Johannesburg), Cape Town International, and Lanseria airports.

VFS Global (Traditional Sticker Visa): Travellers who are not eligible for ETA processing may need to apply through the conventional visa route facilitated by VFS Global.

  • Processing: 3–5 weeks.
  • Fee: VFS service charge of approximately Rs. 2,000–3,000 per person (visa itself is free of charge for tourists).

Apply at least 4–8 weeks before travel. Peak season (May–August, December–January) sees VFS slots book out quickly in Delhi, Mumbai, and Bangalore.

Top Places to Visit with South Africa Tour Packages

Cape Town

Often considered South Africa’s most beautiful city, Cape Town is famous for its stunning blend of mountains, beaches, and cultural attractions. Indian travellers can also book a personalised Cape Town tour package to enjoy the cable car ride to Table Mountain, explore the vibrant Bo-Kaap neighbourhood, stroll along the lively V&A Waterfront, and visit the historic Robben Island. Nearby highlights include the scenic coastline of Camps Bay, the penguin colony at Boulders Beach, the dramatic landscapes of Cape Point, and the renowned wine regions of Stellenbosch and Franschhoek.

Kruger National Park

A visit to Kruger National Park is a must for wildlife enthusiasts. One of Africa’s largest game reserves, it is home to the iconic Big Five, namely lion, leopard, elephant, rhino, and buffalo, along with more than 147 mammal species and over 500 bird species. Travellers can enjoy guided game drives, luxury safari lodges, and exceptional wildlife viewing opportunities. Popular areas include Skukuza, the park’s largest rest camp, and the adjoining private reserves of Sabi Sand Game Reserve and Timbavati Private Nature Reserve, known for exclusive safari experiences.

Highlights include whale watching in Hermanus, the picturesque Knysna Lagoon and Knysna Heads, the golden beaches of Plettenberg Bay, and outdoor adventures in Tsitsikamma National Park. Thrill-seekers can also experience the world-famous bungee jump from Bloukrans Bridge.

Johannesburg

As South Africa’s largest city, Johannesburg offers a fascinating insight into the nation’s history and culture. Visitors can explore the acclaimed Apartheid Museum, take a guided tour of Soweto, visit the former home of Nelson Mandela, and walk along the historic Vilakazi Street. Families and adventure lovers can also enjoy the rides and attractions at Gold Reef City.

Durban

Located on South Africa’s eastern coast, Durban is known for its warm climate, beautiful beaches, and vibrant cultural heritage. Home to the largest Indian diaspora community in Africa, the city is renowned for its flavorful curry cuisine. Visitors can relax along the popular Golden Mile promenade, explore the marine attractions of uShaka Marine World, or use the city as a gateway to the stunning iSimangaliso Wetland Park.

Visitors can hike through scenic valleys, admire the towering basalt amphitheatre escarpment, and discover ancient Bushmen rock art sites. Located approximately three to four hours from Durban, the Drakensberg Mountains are ideal for nature lovers, photographers, and outdoor enthusiasts seeking a peaceful escape.

Cape Town vs Garden Route vs Kruger Safari: Which Should You Choose?

The truth is that each destination offers a completely different experience, making them complementary rather than interchangeable.

  • 9–10 Nights: Add a short Garden Route segment to experience South Africa's spectacular coastline.
  • 11+ Nights: Include Cape Town, the Garden Route, and a safari for a comprehensive South Africa experience covering the country's top highlights.

TIP: For most Indian travellers, the combination of Cape Town and a safari provides the most rewarding introduction to South Africa, while the Garden Route becomes the perfect addition if you have extra time to explore.

Best Safari Areas in the Kruger Region

Southern Kruger

The southern section of Kruger is known for having some of the highest concentrations of wildlife in the park. Areas such as Skukuza and Lower Sabie are particularly popular for sightings of lions, leopards, elephants, rhinos, and buffalo.

Central Kruger

Regions around Satara and Olifants are famous for large herds of elephants and buffalo, as well as excellent lion sightings. This area offers a great balance of wildlife viewing and fewer crowds.

Northern Kruger

The northern region provides a more remote safari experience with fewer visitors and excellent elephant sightings. However, the distances between attractions are larger, making it better suited for longer itineraries.

Private Game Reserves

The reserves bordering Kruger offer some of Africa's finest safari experiences.

  • Sabi Sand is renowned for its exceptional leopard sightings and luxury safari lodges.
  • Timbavati offers outstanding wildlife viewing with a more secluded atmosphere.
  • Thornybush and Balule provide excellent value while still delivering high-quality safari experiences.

Best Time for a South Africa Safari

Choosing the right season can significantly influence your wildlife-viewing experience.

Season

Months

What to Expect

Shoulder Season

NOTE: For most Indian travellers, the June to September period offers the best safari conditions, with clear visibility and frequent wildlife sightings. It also coincides with school holidays and summer vacation periods, making it a popular travel season.

South Africa Food Guide for Indian Travellers

Vegetarian and Jain Food in South Africa

While South African cuisine traditionally includes a significant amount of meat, vegetarian travellers can still find plenty of options, especially in major cities.

For Vegetarians

  • Cape Town and Johannesburg offer a growing selection of vegetarian and vegan restaurants.
  • Most hotels and safari lodges can prepare vegetarian meals when informed in advance.
  • Fresh produce, vegetarian snacks, and plant-based products are widely available in supermarkets.
  • International cuisine, including Indian, Mediterranean, and Asian restaurants, is easy to find in major tourist areas.

For Jain Travellers

Jain-friendly meals can be arranged, but they require advance planning.

  • Inform your tour operator, hotel, or safari lodge at least 3–4 weeks before departure.
  • Clearly communicate dietary requirements, including restrictions on onion, garlic, root vegetables, and certain spices.
  • Indian restaurants in Durban and larger cities are generally more familiar with Jain dietary preferences.
  • Carrying ready-to-eat meals or snacks can be helpful, particularly during safari stays or long road journeys.

Indian Food Availability

Indian travellers will be pleased to know that Indian cuisine is widely available across South Africa, especially in cities such as Cape Town, Johannesburg, and Durban. Thanks to the country's large Indian community, visitors can find everything from authentic South Indian dosas and curries to North Indian favourites like butter chicken, biryani, and naan.

Is South Africa Expensive for Indian Travellers?

South Africa is often considered one of the best-value long-haul destinations for Indian travellers. Accommodation, dining, wine tasting, road trips, and wildlife experiences are generally more affordable than comparable experiences in Europe, North America, or Australia.

Travel Tips for Indian Travellers in South Africa

Stay Safe and Travel Smart

Like many popular tourist destinations, South Africa requires travellers to take sensible precautions, especially in major cities.

  • Avoid walking alone late at night in unfamiliar areas.
  • Use trusted ride-hailing services such as Uber or Bolt instead of street taxis.
  • Keep valuables out of sight and store passports, cash, and important documents in your hotel safe.
  • Stick to well-known tourist areas and follow local advice when exploring cities.
  • Popular destinations such as Cape Town, the Winelands, the Garden Route, and major safari regions are generally considered safe for tourists who follow standard travel precautions.

Be Prepared for Malaria Zones

If you are planning a safari in the Kruger region, it's important to be aware that parts of the area fall within a malaria-risk zone.

  • Consult your doctor or travel clinic 4–6 weeks before departure regarding malaria prevention medication.
  • Carry mosquito repellent and wear long sleeves during evening game drives.
  • Families travelling with young children may prefer malaria-free safari destinations such as Addo Elephant National Park or Madikwe Game Reserve, both of which offer excellent wildlife viewing experiences.

Carry the Right Travel Adapter

South Africa uses Type M power sockets, which differ from standard Indian plug types. So, bring a universal travel adapter or a dedicated South Africa-compatible adapter before departure.

Currency and Payments

The local currency is the South African Rand (ZAR).

  • Credit and debit cards are widely accepted across South Africa, including restaurants, hotels, supermarkets, and fuel stations.
  • Visa and Mastercard are the most commonly accepted cards.
  • ATMs are easily available in cities, towns, and shopping centres.
  • Carry a small amount of cash for tips, local markets, and smaller establishments.

Drinking Water

Tap water is generally safe to drink in major cities and tourist hubs such as Cape Town and Johannesburg. In remote areas, safari lodges, and smaller towns, bottled water is often recommended.

Understand Local Tipping Etiquette

Tipping is customary in South Africa and forms an important part of the service industry.

Book Attractions Early

Many of South Africa's most popular attractions have limited daily capacity and can sell out during peak travel seasons.

Consider booking the following in advance:

  • Table Mountain Cableway
  • Robben Island tours
  • Popular safari lodges and game drives
  • Whale-watching excursions (seasonal)
  • Garden Route accommodation during holiday periods

This is especially important if you're travelling between June and September (peak safari season) or December and February (South African summer holidays).

Trip to SA -The itinerary planning was sloppy from start. Couple of swapping of hotels without reasons being said. Due to the swap of hotel in Capetown, things were bit not in favour for tourists. The hotel had no parking and they had paid valet parking. And then the entry and exit of the hotel leads to a square inn with refugees staying there. No complaints on the refugees, but just that they stare at the tourists which we wouldnt feel secure.Miscalculation of driving timings while planning.A practical knowledge on the places will help them probably in planning. The place itself, activities over there, the hospitality by the locals and the support team from PYT were great. South Africa is a beautiful place indeed. Thanks to Sunil, Alex, Preetha and the other support members.

I for India, an Indian Event Management Company from UK Organised a trip for its patrons to South Africa in Dec 2019 for Christmas and New Year. The group had 42 members in total (12 families). The planning started as early as Feb 2019 for the holiday in Dec 2019.Before finalising on Pick Your Trail (PYT), we obtained competitive quotes from various vendors and finally finalised it with PYT based on the professional approach they exhibited, attention to detail and of course competitive pricing.Since Feb 2019 to Dec 2019 we had a very pleasant journey with PYT – especially Sanjay in planning the itinery, hotel, sight seeing, food choices and Sanjay was able to cater to all our requirements. We had regular conference calls at various stages to make sure all the things were addressed.PYT helped us in choosing the right partners based on our requirements and made the holiday an excellent experience. We are a large Indian community in UK and would definitely recommend PYT to our wider circles and patrons. We are also planning our Dec 2020 group holiday with them.

Wonderful experience! A very pro active team both before and during the tour. We got in touch with PYT to plan our honeymoon trip to South Africa. They were very pro active in planning out an itinerary which fits our budget and also made prompt changes as we suggested. Their support during the trip is also commendable, someone is always in touch to answer last minute queries eg identifying indian restaurants around your hotel etc.
